HOWE — Robert R. "Jess" James, age 84, of Howe, Indiana, died Sunday, July 12, 2015 ,at Life Care Center of LaGrange. He was born on August 4, 1930, in Muscatine, Iowa, to Raynard and Esther M. (Streitler) James. He married Rosaine "Ruck" Stark on December 18, 1955, in Muscatine, Iowa. She survives in Howe. Bob graduated in 1948 from Muscatine High School and then attended Muscatine Jr. College and graduated in 1950 and then continued on to the Iowa State Teachers College where he received his Bachelor's Degree in 1953. He later completed his Master's Degree in Education at Indiana University. Mr. James taught school for two years in Iowa prior to moving to Howe in 1956 where he served as a teacher and a coach at Howe Military School for 14 years. He also worked at the Howe Military Summer Camp for 50 years where "The Robert R. James Water Front" was named after him in 1998 for five decades of service. Mr. James was also the first PADI Scuba Diving Certified Instructor in the Midwest area. In 1970 he became the first assistant principal at Sturgis High School and continued there for 20 years, during which he was named assistant principal of the year in 1988 for the state of Michigan. Bob was then a guidance counselor at Lakeland High School from 1990 to 1995. Bob was a longtime member of the Howe Lions Club, and a licensed referee for the IHSAA (Indiana High School Athletic Association). He enjoyed fishing, watching his son's and grandson's sports events, trips to Hawaii with his family and was an avid IU sports fan. He is survived by four sons, Michael C. and Karen James of Howe, Indiana, Daniel S. and Irene James of Neautsue, Oregon, Patrick S. James of Chicago, Illinois, and Kelsey R. James of Howe, Indiana; a sister, Florine and Patrick Hopewell of Muscatine, Iowa; and three grandsons, Adam & Ashley James of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Marcus James of Howe, Indiana, and Tyler Judah James of Howe, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Carney-Frost Funeral Home, LaGrange, Indiana. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the St. James Episcopal Church, Howe Military School, Howe, Indiana, with Col. George Douglas officiating.
