Richard Wunderink, 94, of Lowell, passed away July 14, 2016, at home. He was born on Nov. 21, 1921, in Alcester, South Dakota, the son of Herman and Jennie Wunderink, both deceased. On June 14, 1951, in DeMotte, he married Geraldine Nannenga who survives. He was a farmer and resided on the same farm since 1946, the same farm his dad purchased in 1943. They came from a farm in Westchester, Illinois.He served for many years as an elder in his church, First Christian Reformed of DeMotte, presently was a member of Community Christian Reformed Church of Roselawn , and was a delegate three times to the national Synod of the Christian Reformed Church. He was president of the DeMotte Christian School Board; served on the board for Illiana Christian School; president of Lake County Farm Bureau and on the board for 14 years, served on state committees of resolutions, credentials, and natural resources; board member of Southlake Mental Health during their building program. He was an instrument rated private pilot with over 1,500 hours flying time. With his wife and friends, they flew 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle and as far south as the Dominican Republic. He served on the Governor's Task Force on welfare and poor relief in Lake County. He enlisted in the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor, served on two different ships that were damaged; the range of operations was in Pacific from Tasmania to the Aleutians Islands. He was in the service nearly four years.Richard is survived by his wife, Gerri; eight children, Henry (Brenda), of Lowell, Dr. Richard (Laura), of Chicago, Andrew (Margaret), of Niagara Falls, Canada, Donald (Mae), of Lima, Peru, Robert (Ruth), of Belmont, Michigan, Valerie, of LaGrange Park, Illinois, Rev. Steven (Francine), of Cairo, Egypt, Brenda (Rev. David) Dykstra, of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; 21 grandchildren with nine spouses and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Marie and John.Visitation is Monday, July 25t, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., with Funeral Services following at 12 p.m., all at Community Christian Reformed Church, 10498 North 450 West, DeMotte. Burial will take place in Holland Cemetery with Pastor Jim Busscher officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideon's International.Sheets Funeral Home of Lowell is in charge of arrangements.
