Richard Elry "Dick" Riggs January 23, 1953 - December 16, 2016 Clayton Richard "Dick" Elry Riggs, 63, of Clayton, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on December 16, 2016. The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Hill officiating. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Dick was born on January 23, 1953 to the late Leslie C. and Helen Rhodes Riggs, of Kinston. He was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Fred Riggs of Kinston and a nephew, Josh Riggs of Cary. He is survived by his wife, Donna K. (Willis) Riggs; his son, Casey and his wife, Kirsten Riggs; and his daughter, Nikki and her husband, Cory Mathes, and four grandchildren, Tucker and Piper Riggs and Hunter and Keller Mathes, of Raleigh. He has one surviving brother, Dennis (Rip) and wife, Ora Riggs of Cary, and his brother Fred's wife, Kathy Riggs of Trenton and two nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Macie who followed him everywhere he went. He graduated from Kinston High School Class of 1971. He was an outstanding basketball player and baseball pitcher. He played Little League Baseball and his Kinston team won a state championship. After graduation, he was drafted as a pitcher by the Yankees minor league baseball in Johnson City, Tennessee. He worked in electrical maintenance at the Caswell Center and Frigidaire in Kinston, and retired from Duke Raleigh Hospital. Dick loved playing golf and was an avid NC State Wolfpack fan for more than 40 years. He was a member of Powhatan Original Free Will Baptist Church in Clayton. He loved reading and studying the Bible. The family would like to thank the staffs at Rex Hospital and The Hospice Home for his exceptional care during his brief illness. The family will receive friends on Tuesday one hour prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Building Fund, Powhatan Original Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 1155, Clayton, NC 27520 or to The Hospice Home, 250 Trinity Road, Raleigh, NC 27607.
