Richard Arrowsmith, 85, of Linfield and formerly of Forest City and Montrose, died at Manatawny Manor, Pottstown on July 9, 2013. He was the son of the late James and Matilda Stratford Arrowsmith. Richard was born on August 21,1927 in Forest City.Richard graduated from Forest City High School, class of 1945 and joined the US Navy. He served his country in WWII as Postmaster aboard the transport ship, USS Sherbourne. Upon Richard's discharge, he continued his education at the University of Scranton.In June of 1950, Richard chose Dorothy Bartholomay of Vandling, as his bride. This year celebrating 63 years of marriage. In November, 1950 he secured a position with the PA State Liquor Control Board starting as a clerk, moving up the ranks to the position as manager of the Montrose, PA store. He retired after 36 years of service to the Commonwealth. Richard worked tirelessly to keep a little mission church, Christ Episcopal Church, Forest City, open and operating. He served as head of the Vestry, Sunday School superintendent and janitor all at the same time to help the church survive. He was very happy to know that all is well and his beloved church is flourishing today.Richard was a member of many organizations as follows: the VFW, the American Legion (a continuous member for 67 years), Masonic lodges- Mount Herman Lodge #472, Palestine Commandery #14, Eureka Royal Arch Chapter #179, Temple Council #47, Keystone Consistery, Scranton, and Irem Temple Schriners, Dallas. He was also the youngest fire chief in the Commonwealth of PA in the late 1940's.In addition to his loving wife, Dorothy, Richard is survived by one son Richard D. (Deborah) of Gilbertsville; three grandsons, Jeffrey B (Jessica)and Bradley J. of Gilbertsville and Kyle R. Arrowsmith of Easton; and three great granddaughters - Hayden, Addison and Eleana whom he loved dearly. He referred to them as his three beautiful little girls. He is also survived by one brother Charles (June) of Forest City; two sister in laws, Joan Kigerl and Barbara Bartholmay; and several nieces and nephews. Richard was predeceased by an infant daughter; two brothers, Edward and James; and two sisters, Phoebe Freeland and Myrtle Adlis. There will be a memorial service at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Montrose where Richard and Dorothy have been members for 53 years, at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, July 21, 2013 followed by burial with full military honors at Rounds Cemetery in Uniondale.Local arrangements entrusted to Bartron-Myer Funeral Home, Montrose.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard's name to Christ Episcopal Church, Delaware St, Forest City, PA 18421 or St Paul's Episcopal Church, 276 Church St. Montrose, PA 18801.
