Phillip Raymond Espalin Aug.12, 1939 - Oct. 10, 2016 Phillip Espalin, age 77, passed away on October 10, 2016 in Stockton, California after a long battle with cancer. Phillip was born on August 12, 1939 in Ventura, California to Trinidad Escalante Espalin and Raymond Espalin Jr.Phillip was raised in the Oxnard and Los Angeles areas of southern California where close ties to an extended family were fostered. He graduated in 1957 from Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington, California. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany. Following his service, Phillip earned a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from the University of Southern California. In 1967, he moved to Stockton when the City of Stockton Public Works Department hired him as an architectural draftsman. While working there, he met his wife Patricia. They married in 1971 and purchased a home in central Stockton where they have lived for 45 years.Phillip became a partner in the architectural firm Lawson Itaya Espalin AIA. After Mr. Lawson's retirement, the firm was renamed Itaya Espalin & Associates. These firms were responsible for the design of many commercial buildings, including: Bank of America, several fire stations for the City of Stockton, and the San Joaquin County Office Annex Building. Phillip was appointed to the City of Stockton Cultural Heritage Board where he served for eight years. During that time, he became interested in adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of old buildings for new uses. He was instrumental in the designation of the Hotel Stockton to the National Registry of Historic Places. After retirement in 2004, Phillip served as the architect for the Adaptive Reuse of the California Water Service Station #1 Pump House on Wilson Way in Stockton, developing it into a beautiful, functional, and sustainable office building. In 2014, Phillip was the architect for the Fa‡ade Improvement Grant project on the Assistance League Thrift Shop on East Harding Way in Stockton, directing the remodeling of the exterior into the beautiful and sophisticated look it has today. To support the Assistance League's philanthropic deeds of raising money to support the children of Stockton, Phillip offered his pro-bono services as the architect for the interior redevelopment of the AL Thrift Shop.Phillip is survived by his wife, Patricia Louise Espalin, his son Jonathan Vincent Espalin (Yelena Myakisheva), his sisters Olivia Koehmstedt, Cecilia Huffman (Basil), Virginia Espalin-Forsythe (David), his brother Richard Daniel Espalin (Karren), and many nieces and nephews. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Trinidad Espalin.The family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204.
