Philip "Skip" Alan GarvinDecember 27, 1944 - June 2, 2016Philip "Skip" Alan Garvin passed away peacefully on June 2, 2016 after succumbing to the effects of brain cancer. Skip joined his beloved wife only a few, short weeks after her passing, reuniting with her on the day of their 45th anniversary.Skip was born on December 27, 1944 to Joseph and Shirley Garvin in Pocatello, Idaho. The second of three sons, Skip enjoyed his childhood playing with his brothers as well as camping, hiking, and being outdoors with his family. He took after his father and loved to tinker around the house, taking things apart to find out how they worked, fixing things, improving others, and inventing new ways to do things. Near the end of high school, Skip joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which began a life of dedicated service in the church. After graduating from Pocatello High School, he chose to serve an LDS mission in Brazil. Immediately following his return from Brazil he joined the military. He served three years in the Army, including one year stationed in Vietnam. After returning home, he attended ISU where he met Karen Browning, the love of his life. A few short years after their marriage, Skip and Karen built their own home in the Tyhee area where they lived and raised their family of six children. For many years, Skip owned an electronics repair shop in downtown Pocatello called Skip's T.V. In later years, he returned to ISU to complete his bachelor's degree in secondary education. After graduation, he worked as a science teacher, first at Irving Junior High School and then at Highland High School where he retired after teaching for 20 years. Skip enjoyed his years working with the students and sharing his love of learning with them.Skip had many hobbies. Woodworking, gardening, camping, hiking, electronics, rock collecting, hanging Christmas lights, and watching movies were just a few of the things that he liked to share with his family and friends. He was generous with his time and spent countless hours helping others with repairs, DIY projects, and construction using his talent to mend or create just about anything. Skip was hard-working, resourceful, generous, humorous, and intelligent. He was a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather, enthusiastic teacher and selfless friend.
