Peter Jon Bauer Obituary

Jan 12, 1943 - Oct 26, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Bauer, Peter JonPeter Jon Bauer, 73, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 in Gardnerville, Nevada. He was born on January 12th, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York to Paul and Jayne Bauer. The oldest of eight children, Peter grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. After graduating from Premontre High School in 1961, he joined the U.S. Navy. Soon after, he married the love of his life, Claire Mongin, in Pensacola, Florida in 1964. Their fifty-one years of marriage continues to inspire all those who knew them. As a career military man, Peter quickly climbed the ranks after serving as a Corpsman medic in Vietnam. He earned his master's degree and officer commissioning during his Naval days, retiring as a Lt. Commander. He spent his 26 years of service primarily as Commanding Officer of base hospitals, serving the military community and building some incredible friendships along the way. Peter appreciated the simple things in life and longed for our youth to learn the respect and responsibility that was at his core. He and Claire had three daughters, Renee, Lisa and Cheryl. He went to great effort to show his family this beautiful land we live in; camping, hiking, sight-seeing, and above all learning how to catch their own fish!Throughout the 27 years that he lived in the foothills of the scenic Sierra Nevada Mountains, Peter enjoyed life to the fullest. Along with his family, fishing was his passion and there wasn't a stream within 200 miles from which he couldn't catch a string of trout (or more depending on the limit!). He and Claire had a tremendous appreciation for God's creation and spent most of their time with family and friends exploring and enjoying the great outdoors. In 1994, Peter and Claire realized their dream of opening a local fly fishing shop called "The Angler's Edge," where numerous "fish tales" were exchanged for more than 10 years. He was involved in, and an advocate for, "catch and release" legislation and participated in community youth events to share his love for fishing and respect for nature. Peter had the skill of a surgeon and over the years used his talented hands building beautiful, intricately detailed model ships to scale, carving and painting wildlife, and of course making custom fly rods and tying flies. Peter also had a witty sense of humor and loved a fast car, a good game of poker with the guys, shooting pool at the house, tinkering in his extraordinary train room, listening to the Doobie Brothers or doing a little ground squirrel hunting. Being from Green Bay, he was an avid Packer football fan and he and Claire enthusiastically cheered them on through every season.Peter had a strong faith and a genuinely sanguine personality, though the sudden passing of his beloved wife, Claire, last February and his numerous health issues were very difficult on him. However, He never lost sight of his many blessings from our Lord and Savior and did his best to pass them on to his children, grandchildren and all those who may have crossed his path.Peter is survived by his daughter Renee Whitney and husband Chris of Reno, Nevada and her son Ryan; daughter Lisa Bauer Hoffman and her husband, Guy, of Houston, Texas and their daughters, Erica and Claire; and Cheryl Symonds and her husband Curtis of Lemoore, California and their sons, Curtis Jr. and Derek. Peter is also survived by his mother, Jayne Bauer of Green Bay, Wisconsin and his seven siblings, Sue (John) Keller, Mike (Ann) Bauer, Christine (Tom) LeCapitaine, Mary Beth Bauer, Ann (Jim) Corkery, Margaret Collins, David (Kristi) Bauer, and brothers-in-law Steven (Becky) Mongin and Pat (Sandi) Mongin. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews throughout the country and Australia. Finally, Peter was preceded in death by his be-loved wife, Claire, and his father, Paul Bauer of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Peter, you will be missed by so many and you were loved so much. We know the Lord welcomed you into the kingdom with open arms, as did your beautiful bride.A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville, Nevada on Thursday, November 17th at 11:00 o'clock a.m. with a reception to follow. The family requests that any donations be made to The in Peter's name.
