Paul Riehl, 90, a lifelong Sheboygan resident, died in Plymouth on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, after an apparent heart attack.Paul is survived by his daughters, Darla Kondreck (Jim), Cindy Jensen (Tom) and Bambi Riehl (Steve Schultze); five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His beloved wife Patricia died in 2014, and son-in-law Jim Kondreck also preceded Paul in death.Paul was born on Sept. 16, 1926, in Kraiburg, Germany, and lived in the small Bavarian town of Hohenwarth. He came to the United States at age four on the ocean liner Columbus with his mother, three older sisters and a younger brother, a trip he fondly recalled all his life. They joined his father, who had emigrated from Germany to Wisconsin three years earlier. The family lived in Kohler, Cleveland and Sheboygan. Paul's parents, Maria and Adolph, raised seven children, including Veronica, Frieda, Mary, Ed, Frank and Rudy. All except Frank, of Denver, Colo., preceded Paul in death. Paul met his wife in 1944 when the Riehl family moved across the street from Patricia's family in Sheboygan. They wed three years later in 1947 and lived in the same S. 21st St. home that had been Paul's family's house. Paul and Patricia were married for 67 years. Paul was a proud U.S. Army paratrooper, who enjoyed practice jumps so much he volunteered to substitute jump for some of his less enthusiastic Army buddies. He served in Japan and the Philippines during and after World War II. Like his father before him, Paul worked at Kohler Company. Paul also was a picket captain during the years-long Kohler strike, which began in 1954. Later, he worked in the family business, Kleeman Sheet Metal and Heating, where he was part owner. He was proud to refer to himself as a "metalbender" and enjoyed the wide variety of people he met installing heating and air conditioning equipment all over Sheboygan County. Paul and Patricia were long-time and active members of St. Paul's United Church of Christ where they made many cherished friends. They enjoyed fishing, boating and family get-togethers at their summer cottage at Lake Winnebago. He also was a Meals On Wheels volunteer. Paul and Pat lived in the same Sheboygan home for over 60 years until 2012, when they moved to an assisted living home in Sheboygan Falls. In keeping with family wishes, no funeral or memorial services will be held. Instead, the family will gather in private at a later date to celebrate his life.
