Odessa Payne Martin, 97 of Bedford, passed away Friday, Oct. 28, 2016 at Liberty Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Sunday, Nov. 24, 1918 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Johnny Ward Payne and Mary Mitchell Payne. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Rucker Martin and her son, Roger Wayne Martin. She was a retired nurse and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Jimmie Rucker Martin and wife, Carolyn of Lynchburg; her grandchildren, Paul Wesley Martin and wife, Susan of Lynchburg, Jimmie R. Martin, Jr. of Lynchburg, Benjamin M. Martin and wife, Darlene of Lynchburg; her great-granddaughters, Madison M. Martin, Mya Elizabeth Martin, Leah Katherine Martin and special family friends, Betty Hess, Melba Craig, Betty Davis. A special thanks to everyone at Liberty Ridge for their special care. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Trinity Baptist Church, 947 Lyle Street, Bedford, VA 24523. The family received friends at 1 PM on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016 at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford and a funeral service followed at 2 PM in the chapel with Rev. Vernon Delong officiating. Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
