He married Joy (Green) Woody from Snyder in Cross Plains on December 23, 1967. Together they raised four children; Russell, Rex, Marshall and Deborah. He also had two daughters, Beverly and Marie at the time of their marriage. He accepted the Lord as his savior and was baptized in the First Baptist Church of Clyde in 1973.He started working on an oil rig as a driller when he was 16 years old. He moved to Texas in 1948 as a young lad of 19 when the oil boom hit in Snyder, Texas. He lived in Snyder and Winters before settling in Abilene. He helped organize West Tex Drilling Co. along with Meryl Greathouse, Bob Cockrell and Betty Cummings in 1953. He later left West Tex Drilling and organized his own drilling company, Nortex Drilling Company and ran it until the oil slump in 1980. He temporarily went out of the oil business until 1983 when he reorganized another company, Fiscus Drilling Company in Midland along with Bob Zony and Cecil Rhodes. In 1985 he moved his office to Sand Springs when he bought his partners out and built two more rigs. He sold out in 1988 and became an independent contractor and production engineer, retiring from the field to become an independent operator of his own leases in 1990. He was active in cattle production and raising goats and sheep. Nort loved to country and western dance and was a great dancer. He enjoyed driving the grandkids and great grandkids around the ranch with his homemade trailer and his gator at reunion time each year. He was a wonderful storyteller and loved to tell stories about the old days living on a farm in Illinois during the Depression with his parents and three brothers and three sisters. He also had many stories to tell about the oilfield and how it had changed over the years. He will be missed by many.
