This obituary is administered by:
YORK Nels G. Juleus, 88, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Rest Haven Nursing Home in York. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 67 years, Jackie (Ott) Juleus. He was born on February 16, 1926, in Akron, Ohio and raised in Cleveland. He was the son of Swedish immigrants, and he quit high school at age 17 to join the United States Navy, where he served in the Pacific operations during World War II. After the war, he returned to Cleveland, married and went to college under the G.I. Bill. He studied communications and eventually earned his Ph.D from Western Reserve in Cleveland (now part of Case Western Reserve). He became a college professor at Allegheny College in Meadville, in 1955 where he taught speech and communications as well as humanities for over 40 years until his retirement. He served as chair of the speech and drama department at the college for many years. He was well published in his field, having written three books and countless articles. After his retirement, he and his wife, Jackie, move to York, to be close to his daughter, Kris and her family. In addition to his wife, Jackie, he is survived by two daughters, Kristen O'Shea and her husband Thomas, of York, and Jill Case and her husband Bryan, of Tacoma, Washington. He is survived by four grandchildren, Kelly O'Shea, Molly O'Shea Norton, Brian O'Shea and Brenden Wygant. He also has five great-grandchildren. He is survived by two sisters, Barbara Hornsby of Tampa, Florida and Carol Houken of Atlanta, Georgia. A celebration of Nels's life will be held at Covenant Moravian Church, 901 Cape Horn Rd, York, PA on Sunday, April 27th at 12:30pm. Nels was an expert educator, dynamic speaker, debate coach, actor, writer and painter. He had a spirit of inquiry that has inspired many, but he is best known for his love of humor. It is appropriate that his memorial service will be held on the church's "Humor Sunday." Workinger Semmel Funeral Homes and Cremation, Inc., York, is assisting with arrangements. Gifts in Nels's memory can be made to Allegheny College, Office of Annual Giving, 520 N.
