Sargent, Neil William 85, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on April 2, 2017. He was born on September 10, 1931 in Olympia, Washington. Neil was an unusual and fortunate survivor of childhood polio without handicap. He lived in and was schooled in many Oregon and Washington towns. A graduate of Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington, he attended the University of Puget Sound and Oregon State University where he was an Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity member and active in drama. A graduate of the Northwestern School of Broadcasting in Portland, Oregon, he went on to a nomadic career in radio including as an announcer/DJ in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Astoria and Portland, Oregon and Phoenix, Arizona. From there he went into radio programming, advertising sales, eventually owning stations in Yuma, Arizona and managing stations in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada, Lancaster-Palmdale, California, and Phoenix. The last 20 years of his career were spent in management positions in music/radio production and syndication in Dallas, Texas and Albuquerque, New Mexico and radio networks in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Los Angeles, California. He retired in 1999 as President/CEO of TM Century, Inc., Dallas, Texas and moved back to Phoenix and the Arizona desert he so loved. At different times and places during his life, Sarge was active in the Jaycees, Kiwanis, March of Dimes, Republican Party, chambers of commerce, Toastmasters, Radio Advertising Bureau, state and National Association of Broadcasters, and various civic boards and committees. He was very proud of the many people in broadcasting that he had mentored. Neil had a passion for popular music and jazz of the 30s, 40s and 50s, for reading, particularly biographies, for the game of golf, and for traveling, especially by auto. He traveled to all 50 states and 22 countries, boasted that he played 18 of the world's top 100 golf courses, and once traveled around the world in 11 days...even turning it into a radio promotion. Dad is survived by his sister Marjorie of Gig Harbor, Washington, ex-wives Carole Sargent of Lake Oswego, Oregon and Linda Wesseler of Loveland, Ohio, daughters Lesley in Phoenix and Ayn in Portland, Oregon, four granddaughters, one grandson, three great-granddaughters, two great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. There will be no services. He will be laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery, Tacoma, Washington this summer. Contributions in his honor would be welcome to , Arizona Broadcasters Association, House of Broadcasting.
