Michael Dale Martin, 62, of Wallace, S.C., formerly of Laurel Hill, N.C., died peacefully on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at the Carolinas Hospital in Florence, S.C. after an extended illness.

He was born on June 19, 1951, the youngest son of the late David B. and Mary Frances (Gardner) Martin, in Lincolnton.

Mike grew up in the Laurel Hill community, attended the local schools and graduated from Scotland High School where he was a superb athlete. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He was a lover of the outdoors and a lifelong fisherman who enjoyed all athletic competitions.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Joyce Honeycutt; his sister, Brenda Martin Newman of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and brother, Gus (Elaine) Martin of Raleigh. Other immediate family members include nieces, Cindy De Los Santos Horton, Jennifer Martin Reel, and Sara Martin; nephews, Marty De Los Santos and David Martin, as well as numerous cousins who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom Martin.

Mike was a friend to all and a gentle spirit. He spent most of his working life in commercial construction. He will be missed by all who knew him.

The family will receive friends at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Pastor David Shoemake of the Springfield Church of God will be officiating the service.

Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
