Michael M. Smith, age 71, passed away on October 17, 2016 in Bellingham. He was born on August 19, 1945 in Bellingham to Richard and Frances (Deming) Smith. Michael graduated from Bellingham High School and earned his B.A. in Business at WWU. He served two years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Michael married Susan Abitia on August 28, 1980 in Bellingham. He worked for Trident Seafoods (formerly Vita and Seawest) for over 40 years, retiring as the Director of South East Asia Qingdao Operations. Michael was a loving family man who was known as "Pops" to his kids and grandkids. He worked extremely hard for his family. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Susan, five children, Tracy Anker, Kim (Mike) Bredeson, Oliver (Jennifer) Smith, Michelle Smith and Ryan Smith, grandchildren, Justin, Lesley and Trenton and their father Tim Anker, grandchildren Lauren, Bjorn and Elena, great-grandson Emmett, sister Elizabeth Zavala, his four-legged son Bentley, and many loving relatives and friends. A private family gathering was held.
