Melvin P. "Pete" Smith, Jr., age 81, of Painted Post, NY passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. Pete was born on May 29, 1935 in Painted Post, NY, the son of the late Melvin P. Sr. and the late Nellie (Jenks) Smith. He married Elenora Neally on July 9, 1955. She predeceased him in 2011. In his younger years he worked as a farm-hand for Dann's Dairy Farm. He was later employed by Dresser-Rand for 17 years before beginning employment with the Carpenters Union Local 700, where he retired with over 20 years of service. He was a master carpenter, building two homes throughout his career. In his free time Pete enjoyed coon and rabbit hunting. He was a lover of music, especially blue grass music, often attending blue grass festivals. He played in a band for a number of years which included him playing the bass, fiddle, mandolin and harmonica. His greatest joy came from socializing with his many friends and family. He is survived by three children: Pamela Palmer of Lindley, NY, Ronald (Julie) Smith of Bath, NY, Traci Smith of Corning, NY; grandchildren: Hope Hensley, Shawn Palmer, Jeremy Palmer, Renee Smith, Rachelle Hostrander, Jordan Smith, Brittany Tyler, Samantha Tyler; many great grandchildren; sisters: Delores (Bill) Holt and Hattie Robinson both of South Carolina; and brother, Johnny (Carol) Smith of Florida. In addition to his parents and wife, Pete was predeceased by his brother, Donald Smith.Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Monday, December 19, 2016 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00pm, Rev. Ronald Head officiating. Burial will take place in the family plot in Presho Cemetery, Lindley. Following the burial there will be a gathering of friends and family at the Addison American Legion Post 730, 85 Maple Street, Addison, NY.
