Melvin Junior Toppen age 73, of DeMotte, IN passed away on June 2, 2012 at VNA Hospice, Valparaiso, IN. He was born on March 16, 1939 in DeMotte, IN, to Melvin H. and Evelyn (Dexter) Toppen, both deceased. Junior attended DeMotte High School and was a retired self employed auto repairman and school bus driver. On June 12, 1959 he married Rita Hoffman, who survives. Junior was a member of First Reformed Church, where he was a former Elder, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Youth Group Leader. He had also served on the DeMotte Town Board as Police Commissioner. Junior is survived by his loving wife, Rita Toppen of DeMotte, INChildren; Julia Toppen, and Bruce (Dawn) Toppen, all of DeMotte, IN; David (Julie) Toppen, Mishawaka, IN.7 grandchildren; Rachel (Ryan), Eric (Heather), Jonathan, Joshua, Sarah, Maranda, & Jonah.4 great-grandchildren, Brayden, Alex, Meghan & Leighton.Brothers & Sisters; Eleanor (Harold) Kingma, DeMotte, IN; Margaret (Vern) Tillema, Wheatfield, IN; James (Eileen) Toppen, DeMotte, IN; Robert (Carol) Toppen, DeMotte, IN and Karen (Paul) Kamminga, Pendleton, IN. Friends may call Tuesday June 5, 2012 from 2-8 PM at Jackson Funeral Service, 200 Third St. SW, DeMotte, IN. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 AM on Wednesday June 6, 2012 at First Reformed Church, DeMotte, IN with Pastor Roger Huitink officiating.
