Marvin Dale "Mike" Nordmeyer1929-2016Marvin Dale "Mike" Nordmeyer, age 87, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on October 12, 2016. Mike was born on a farm near Chebanse, Kankakee County, Illinois on July 19, 1929.Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel Elizabeth Miller Nordmeyer and Paul John Nordmeyer and his older brothers, Arnold William Nordmeyer and Donald Paul Nordmeyer.Mike is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruth Elizabeth Kimmel Nordmeyer, and their two daughters, Debra Lynn Nordmeyer and Barbara Ann Upton; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Perry, Katherine Lynn Schares and Christopher Thomas Upton; and one much-loved great grandchild, Everett Alexander Perry. Mike is also survived by his sister, Eunice Ethel Wakeman of Joliet, Illinois.Mike received a degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Illinois in 1951, graduating with honors. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. Mike loved the land and the country life, and planned a career in Farm Management. However, these plans changed.From 1951 to 1955, Mike served as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He was a radar operator, navigator and bombardier in heavy bombers. He bravely flew over 50 bombing missions over North Korea during the Korean War. In 1952, Mike met the love of his life, Ruth Elizabeth Kimmel, of Tyler, Texas. They courted, became engaged and finally married on September 18, 1954.Mike resigned his Air Force career in August 1955 after 4 years of service and moved with his new wife, Ruth, to Houston, Texas. There he furthered his education at the University of Houston, earning a degree in Math & Physics, again, graduating with honors. Thereafter, his new career in Houston included long tenures at Texas Instruments and Compaq Computer. Before and after his retirement, Mike and Ruth enjoyed travelling. When they stayed at home, simple pleasures were enjoyed by dining out and being with family. Mike became an enthusiast student of the financial markets and investing.Mike's life was exemplified by his generosity, kindness and patience. He was a faithful member of Chapelwood Methodist Church, the Candlelighters Sunday School Class, and an active volunteer. Mike also volunteered as a tutor and mentor at Spring Branch Elementary School for 13 years. At their home in Houston, Mike was an avid "landscape artist"/gardener for many, many years.A celebration of Mike's life will be held at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, in the Chapel, 11140 Greenbay Street, Houston, Texas on October 20th at 1:00 p.m. Please enter church parking lot at Entrance "A".
