Marvin Dwight Heaton, 90Piggott, AR - Marvin Dwight Heaton, husband of Peggy A. Heaton, died September 23, 2017 surrounded by family after a lengthy illness in Piggott, Arkansas.Marvin was born on February 14, 1927, in Muncie, Indiana, son of Byron J. Heaton and Hulda Scudder Heaton. He attended Muncie Schools and graduated from Burris High School in 1944. He was a member of the 1941-42  Burris High School Basketball Team that played in the Indiana Championship Finals.  He held both Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees in secondary education from Ball State University.  He taught and coached at Pierceton, Indiana prior to moving to Richmond, Indiana in 1958, where he was employed by the Richmond Community Schools until his retirement in 1988.While at Ball State University, Marvin lettered in four sports -- basketball, football, baseball and tennis.  But it was in basketball that he attained his greatest achievements, setting a school career scoring record (1186 pts) that wasn't beaten until seven years later and still ranks 22nd of all time.  In 1983, Marvin was inducted into the Ball State University Athletic Hall of Fame.  Marvin was an avid tennis player throughout his life and well into retirement, winning many tournaments along the way.Marvin was a Veteran of WWII, where he served with great pride in the 8th Army, 23rd Battalion overseas in Japan from 1945-46.    In Piggott, Marvin was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as an Usher.  He was also a member of the local Sugar Creek Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf with friends and family in his later years.Marvin is survived by his wife of 68 years, Peggy A. Heaton; three sons, Michael J. Heaton of Essex, CT, Richard J. Heaton and wife Amy of Joshua, TX, and Kevin P. Heaton and wife Geney of Galveston, TX; four Grandchildren, Andrew P. Heaton of New Braunfels, TX, Jessica Heaton Jack and husband David Jack of Perth, Scotland, Patrick A. Heaton of Dallas, TX, and Scott B. Heaton and wife Taylor of Watauga, TX; four Great-Grandchildren, Audrey G. Heaton of Pasadena, TX, Evan D. Jack of Perth, Scotland, and Molly J. and Cooper J. Heaton of Watauga, TX; and one niece, Beth Wilson of Muncie, Indiana, and other cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron J. and Hulda E. Heaton, one sister and brother in law, Lois J. and Robert Bronnenberg of Muncie, IN and one niece; Tresha Covey of Florida.The funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Piggott, Arkansas on September 30, 2017 at 11:00am.  Pastor John Heigel will be officiating.  Burial will be in the Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers are Andrew Heaton, Patrick Heaton, Scott Heaton, Kirby Johnson, Kyle Johnson, and Frank Staples.  Calling will be on September 29, 2017 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home, 142 N 3rd Ave, Piggott, AR 72454The family wishes to thank the outstanding healthcare workers from both the Piggott Community Hospital Home Health and the Legacy Hospice teams for their compassionate care of Marvin over the last several months.  You truly made a difference in his and our lives.In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made in Marvin's memory to the First United Methodist Church, 188 N 3rd Ave; Piggott, Arkansas 72454.
