Martin Bernard McDonough, Jr.AGE: 67 • NewarkMartin Bernard McDonough, Jr. of Newark, son of Martin B., Sr. and Katherine (McHugh) McDonough, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2017, surrounded by the infinite love of his family. Martin was born on January 3, 1950, in Wilmington, Delaware. While attending Salesianum School, he played baseball and football, and continued his baseball career as a student at the University of Delaware, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Accounting. After graduation, he attained CPA accreditation.Marty's career began with the Internal Revenue Service, and was followed with a partnership with Whisman and Associates CPA firm. After leaving public accounting, he moved on to a long and fulfilling career with Wilmington Trust Company. He completed his work career at the University of Delaware before health issues forced him into retirement. In 2009, Marty was diagnosed with leukemia and then, through the gift of an anonymous donor, he received a bone marrow transplant in 2012. He battled long and hard through every challenge along the way with immeasurable strength and stamina. Everyone who met him in the course of his struggle immediately recognized his relentless drive to do whatever he needed to do to find healing and restored health. Marty was a brave and courageous warrior in every sense of the word and fought with integrity to his last breath.Marty was a member of the AICPA and he was a founding member of the Board of Trustees for the Kalmar Nyckel, serving as treasurer for many years. He served on the Board of Trustees for Mount Aviat Academy as a founding member and Chairperson of the Finance Committee. He also served on the Game Day Committee of the DFRC Blue-Gold Football Game, impeccably handling all the finances and reporting. Marty took great pride in all his work to ensure clarity and accuracy in every way. Many will remember Marty as the honest and wonderful friend he was. He touched many in his lifetime with his kind heart and selfless commitment to anyone in need. He gave with humility, expecting nothing in return. Of all of his accomplishments, he was most proud of his family. He was married to the love of his life, Martha, for 43 years. To his three daughters, he was the strongest man they knew. No one could have asked for a better father, mentor, or friend. When his first grandchild was born, he was overjoyed with his new role as Poppy, and to his 7 grandchildren, he was a true hero. We're eternally thankful that all the grandchildren were able to know and love their Poppy. The last few weeks our family had with him were a true gift, giving us time to share stories, feelings and, most of all, love. It is that everlasting love for each other that truly defines our family. He is now among the angels and is no longer suffering. He leaves the world a better place because he was here! The family would like to sincerely thank all of the wonderful doctors and nurses who were with us through Marty's journey. We were blessed to have so many angels on earth that led and supported all of us through this difficult time. To our dear Sandy, all of the Christiana Care nurses on 6B and in the MICU, you are angels on earth. You were all a true gift to our family as we navigated through this journey. Some became family to us over the years and we will never forget the love and care that you showed to Marty and our family. Martin is survived by his wife of 43 years, Martha (Mavity) McDonough, his daughters and the wonderful sons we inherited, Julie Fausnaugh (Craig), Katherine Ricevuto (Chris), and Lindsay Spada (Nick), and his seven beloved grandchildren Kathryn Grace, Emma Claire, and Madelyn Alyssa Fausnaugh, Lauren Claire and Luke Christopher Ricevuto, and Dominic Andrew and Caroline Maria Spada. He is also survived by his sister Sharon Phillips (Stephen), brothers-in-law, William Mavity (Linda) and Richard Mavity (Carole), sister-in-law, Diane Welsh, and many nieces and nephews.
