Martha Kay (Colson) SmithMartha Kay (Colson) Smith, 81, of Fowler, IN, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017, at IU Health in Lafayette.Martha was born on November 5, 1935, in Tangier, IN, daughter to the late Thurman and Kathleen (Commons) Colson.  She graduated from Tangier High School in 1953 and attended Purdue University.  Martha married Walter K. Smith, Jr. on June 12, 1955.  They lived most of their married lives in the Earl Park area, where they raised their two sons, David and Steven.Above all, Martha loved her family and serving the community in which she lived. Martha was a long-time member of Tri-Kappa and the Benton County Extension Homemakers.  She served as president of both organizations.  She also served as a board member on the Benton County Community Foundation and the Area Four Council on Aging.  She played the organ for fifty years at the Earl Park Presbyterian Church, where she and her husband were long-time members.  Martha also helped to shape the lives of numerous youth as a long-time county 4-H leader.  Martha was preceded in death by her son, Steven in 2000 and her younger brother, Larry Colson in 2002.  She is survived by her devoted husband, Walter K. Smith, Jr., her son and daughter-in-law, David and Jane Smith.  One grandson, Jared (Angie) Whitwer of Earl Park, IN, one grand-daughter, Renee (Brett) Beckner of Westfield, IN and 3 great-grandchildren.Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, at Windler Funeral Home.Services will be at 11 a.m., May 18, at the Earl Park Presbyterian Church.
