Mark Notar Obituary

Aug 20, 1956 - Jun 07, 2011

This obituary is administered by:
Lifelong Alaskan and Juneau resident Mark Notar passed away at his home June 7, 2011 after a brief bout with cancer. Mark was born on August 20, 1956 at the old St. Ann's hospital and attended Juneau schools, graduating from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1974. Although not given a middle name at birth, he took one himself, using his mother's maiden name of Avoian, which he proudly incorporated right into his signature. He had a passion for most sports, but he particularly loved baseball/softball and golf, playing both while growing up and into adulthood. In his younger years he also enjoyed fishing and camping with friends. He attended many golf tournaments through the years sponsored by the Juneau Golf Club in Arizona and Washington, and enjoyed them all. Mark also was an avid bowler, and once bowled the perfect score of 300. He worked both for the State of Alaska and the City & Borough of Juneau, and the last few years was employed as a seasonal Warehouseman for Alaska Electric Light & Power Co. Mark was a longtime member of Elks Lodge #420, the Juneau Golf Club, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1547. Mark was a quiet and private man with a great sense of humor, and when he opened up to people they never forgot him. He cherished all his friends and family dearly and they knew it. Even near the end his sense of humor was evident when his nephews gave him a goodbye hug; he said to nephew Jake with a smile and teary eyes, "you don't have to squeeze the life outta me." With his passing, although they likely do not know it, the St. Louis Cardinals major league baseball team has lost one of their very biggest fans; when they didn't win Mark bled Cardinal red.Mark was preceded in death by his Grandmother and Grandfather Elena and Rudy Notar, Sr., Grandmother and Grandfather Shamerion and Mike Avoian, Uncles Mike "Bingo" Avoian and August Avoian, Mother and Father Mary and Rudy Notar, and Brother Marvin Notar.Mark is survived by his Brother Mike Notar (Becky Thomas), nephews Jeffrey and Jacob Notar, Aunt Lois Avoian, and Cousins Sandy Polley, Bill Bell and Jeannie Engen. There will be a celebration of life for Mark on what would have been his 55th birthday, Saturday, August 20, 2011 at a place and time to be determined at a later date. Contributions in his name may be made to individuals' local charities of choice.
