This obituary is administered by:
Mystic - Mark Hogan, 74, of Mystic, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.Mark was born on July 4, 1942, in Monroe, N.C., the son of Raymond Paul and Mary (Morris) Hogan. Mark served in the U.S. Marine Corps from which he received an honorable discharge at the rank of corporal in January 1966. Mark subsequently earned a bachelor of arts degree in English language and literature from Pace University and a master of arts degree in theater from UCONN where he was a Shubert Fellow. His first job was as a reporter and bureau chief for the Patent Trader newspaper in Mount Kisco, N.Y. While working full-time as a newsman, Mark completed the certification process to earn his teaching credentials and to make the transition to education.Mark taught English at East Lyme High School which included teaching elective courses in journalism, layout and design, creative writing and video production. In addition, Mark directed several student productions and served as an advisor for the school newspaper. Although he maintained a sense of humor about the unique behaviors of high school students, Mark set out clear standards and expectations. Woe betide the student who did not take him seriously. After studying The Glass Menagerie, one of Mark's classes even adopted the name, "The Hogan Gang." Mark retired from East Lyme High School in 1998.Mark was active in community theater as an actor and as a director with the Stonington Players and Intentional Theatre. Among the productions in which he acted were Our Town, Duchess of Noank, Large Red Interior, Furniture, and 27 Wagons Full of Cotton. One Halloween season Mark gleefully spent scaring the pants off visitors during Mystic Seaport's Nautical Nightmares. In retirement, Mark worked as a volunteer with adults seeking to master reading and writing English, either because it was a second language or because they never learned the skills. In 2012, it was Mark's privilege to assist 98-year old Captain James Arruda Henry to write his memoir, In a Fisherman's Language, an account of Henry's life and triumph over illiteracy.Mark is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth C. Hogan of Groton and Sheila Fellerath (and husband, John) of Wilmington, N.C.; and his brother, John J. Hogan of Griswold. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary; and his brother, Paul.A man who delighted in the role of uncle, Mark is survived by three nephews, four nieces, their spouses and children. Mark was a true and faithful friend who enjoyed the company and support of friends who were true and faithful to him.Mark's family wishes to express deep admiration and appreciation to "Team Mark," the men and women of Pendleton Health & Rehabilitation Center, DaVita Dialysis Center, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Pequot Health Center, and American Ambulance.Mark will be buried with military honors on Oct. 31, at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.Donations in his memory may be directed to the , 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10010 or the Development Fund, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, 365 Montauk Ave., New London, CT 06320.Please visit www.byles.com to sign the guest book or share a memory.
