Marie "Kay" Pesce, a long time resident of Sacramento died on November 11 at the age of 98. Kay was born on April 17, 1918. She grew up in the small mountain town of McCloud, California, the third child of Italian immigrants, Frank and Elizabeth Chiarucci. Kay graduated from McCloud High School in 1935 and was the first of her family to attend college. Kay graduated from UC Berkeley in 1939. Shortly after graduation, Kay moved to Tule Lake California where she began her teaching career. In the mid 40's Kay moved to Sacramento where she began teaching at Sacramento High School. During that time she met her future husband, Henry Pesce, whom she married in 1948. Kay was a long time member of St. Mary's Parish and one of the founding members of the St. Mary's Social Club. Kay returned to teaching in the early 1960s. She spent one year teaching second grade at St. Mary's School and then joined the staff when the new St. Francis High School opened on M Street. Kay was a beloved foreign language teacher for several years and then moved into administration, serving as the vice principal of St Francis High School until her retirement in the mid 1980s. After retirement Kay volunteered for the Mercy Guild and Wellspring Women's Center. She was an active member of the Dante Club and the Italian Catholic Federation. She served as president of both the Dante Club and the Mercy Guild. In her spare time, Kay enjoyed playing golf, painting and traveling. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years. She is survived by her son, Michael Pesce of Los Angeles and daughter, Heidi Veneman of Granite Bay and three grandsons: Adam Pesce, Matt Pesce and Matthew Veneman. Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 21 at St. Mary's Church located at 58th and M Streets in Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Francis Catholic High School, Sacramento, CA in her memory.
