Monser, Marie DeniseSister Marie Denise Monser, CSJ, 91, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at home in Oneonta. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 64 years. Sister Marie Denise, the former Esther Mary Monser, was born on June 14, 1925 in Oneonta, daughter of the late Francis and Shelby (Nader) Monser, Lebanese immigrants. She graduated from Oneonta High School and Lowell Business School and worked for Ozalid Corporation in Binghamton. On March 19, 1952, Sister Marie entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy, NY, and professed final vows on August 15, 1959. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in speech and hearing, both from The College of Saint Rose. For 57 years, she served as teacher and principal in schools of the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. Since 2011, Sister Marie has been a parish minister at St. Mary's Parish, Oneonta. Sister Marie Denise was a dedicated educator for nearly six decades, working closely with parents and families to ensure the best possible outcome for the students. Later in her life, she was devoted to bringing the Gospel message to St. Mary's parishioners, and she delighted in the many pastoral relationships she developed. Sister Marie cherished her last years in Oneonta and the opportunity to return to her roots to spend time with her family. Her lifelong service, guided by her deep faith and concern for others, is Sister Marie's lasting legacy.Sister Marie's family fondly remembers her for her love of children, her generosity, her positive attitude, and love of ice cream. She was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed watching Syracuse Basketball games.Sister Marie Denise is survived by two sisters, Madolyn Danzi and Katherine Kaufman; a sister in law, Myrna Monser; several nieces and nephews and their families; and the Sisters of St. Joseph. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Monsieur Monser; two sisters and brothers in law, Marion and Irvin Barton, Pauline and Albert Colone; and two brothers and sister in law, Thomas and Marguerite Monser, and Francis "Bud" Monser; and two brothers in law, Otto Danzi and Rusell Kaufman.Sister Marie's wake will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2016 from 3:00-5:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut Street, Oneonta, NY 13820. Evening prayers will begin at 5:30 to conclude the wake.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, December 9, 2016 at 10:15 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. Burial will take place Friday afternoon in the cemetery at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham.
