PARADISE - Margarette "Marie" Hooker Newbrand, 90, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at the Logan Regional Hospital.Marie was born on Nov. 30, 1919, in Wardel, Mo., daughter of James Franklin and Clarissa Elizabeth Welch Hooker. She was the second eldest of 10 children. Her family moved to Chaffee, Mo., when Marie was 2 1/2 where her daddy worked for the Union Pacific and Santa Fe Railroad until he retired. At an early age Marie became her momma's right hand and helper, learning to cook at age nine for her family. Even in elementary school she washed clothes on the washboard, tended her many younger siblings and took tender care of her mother, who was ill a lot.She was always able to make wonderful meals for her loved ones, she had the happy knack of making seemingly nothing to cook into delicious, satisfying feasts. Marie was very spiritual and had a keen and discerning ability to read the hearts and spirits of others. She could tell a lot about a person within only a few moments of meeting them. Marie was always religious and active in the church. She began playing the piano for meetings when she was 11 years old. When she was 21 she went to St. Louis to work and help her family out. It was wartime and she met a lot of new and interesting people. While living there, she met her sweetheart and eternal companion in the Union Station, while she was waiting for her train to go visit her family. Delwyn was a soldier on a troop train headed for training in Tennesse. They met during a layover, the only way they could have met ... since Delwyn was from Utah. She married Delwyn Alonzo Newbrand on Dec. 7, 1943, and were best friends, helpmates and loving companions for 65 years. There were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple in 1952. Together they had two daughters, Sherida Marie and Shawna Sue (David) Eggli. However they have foster children galore whom they loved without reservation and with all their hearts, Robert and Tina Bates; Keith and Jeanette Davis; Melinda and David Miller; Dale and Cardle Smith. They have 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and their families; one sister and half-sister. She was preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings, one grandson, and her beloved husband Delwyn, who died in 2007. She is also survived by her sister and half-sister.Marie's family are deeply grateful and wish to thank all the good neighbors and friends in the First and Fourth Ward in Paradise who helped with her care and support during her declining health.Marie served as Relief Society pianist, visiting teacher, inservice leader, visiting teacher, first and second counselor in the Primary, ward choir for 40 years and the Singing Mothers Choir. Even though her identification card lists her as a "homemaker," she was that yet so very much more besides. Marie was a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a member of the Paradise First Ward.Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at 12 p.m. in the Paradise First Ward, 9060 S. 200 West in Paradise (the stake center). There will be a viewing Friday evening at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St. in Logan, from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Paradise cemetery.
