This obituary is administered by:
Lynn Franklin Bracken, 93, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, in Logan. He was born on July 26, 1921, in Logan, Utah, to Aaron Franklin and Ruth Ann Jenkins Bracken. He received his education in Logan, and after graduating from Logan High School, he attended LDS and Henager Business Colleges in Salt Lake City.Lynn married Nadine Erickson on March 6, 1942, in the Logan LDS Temple. Soon after, he enlisted in the Navy and served for the remainder of World War II, spending three years on the USS Guadalcanal and the USS Randolph aircraft carriers. Lynn was serving on the Guadalcanal on June 4, 1944, when their task force captured the German submarine U505. This was the first enemy warship captured on the high seas by the U.S. Navy since 1815, earning the Guadalcanal a Presidential Unit Citation.Upon his return to civilian life, he attended Utah State University and later obtained his electrical license. He owned and operated B & M Electric Corporation in Logan for over 55 years, helping build many of the schools, churches, homes and commercial businesses in Cache Valley.Lynn resided in the Logan 7th Ward for over 70 years, serving in various positions, including Scoutmaster, ward clerk and executive secretary.A dedicated civic worker, he served on the Logan City Council for 17 ½ years, longer than any other councilman. During his term, Lynn was proud of his efforts to build and improve the city, and he played a key role in establishing the Logan River golf course, purchasing the property now used for the Skate Park and Aquatic Center, and redevelopment of the Ellen Eccles Theatre. Lynn was district and local commander of the American Legion, past president of the local chapter of the Intermountain Electrical Association, and more recently served as president of the local chapter of the AARP. Lynn enjoyed the friendship and acquaintance of the many people he had met, worked with and served over so many years. He loved stories of the Old West and enjoyed retelling stories he had heard from his grandfather John Jenkins of crossing the plains. In addition to being busy with many hobbies, including writing short stories and poetry, he had a great love for horses and raised them for many years. He also started a 4-H horse group to share that passion with young people and actively supported that group for several years. Lynn enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and supporting them by attending as many of their activities as possible. He is survived by his wife, Nadine, and four children: Richard (Claudia) Bracken of Logan; Charles (Nicole) Bracken of Annandale, Virginia; Kent Bracken of Evanston, Illinois; and Julie (Darwin) Call of Wellsville; one brother, Vernal (Mary Lou) Bracken of Canyon Lake, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; close family friend Dan Diem; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Ruth Ann Bracken, and his sister Elva.Funeral services will be at noon on Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Mount Logan Stake Center (565 E. 100 South, Logan).
