Lucille KisselDes MoinesLucille Marie Kissel, 87, of Oak Park Heights, MN, died from complications of breast cancer on November 9, 2016. She was born on March 14, 1929, and grew up in Des Moines, IA, with brothers and sisters Erma, Bill, Audrey, and Bob. She worked in banking until she married John W. Kissel, Jr., who ran his own trucking operation. They adopted a baby girl in 1968, and Lucille raised Cheryl Ann on her own after becoming a widow that same year. Lucille later managed the Eidbo Medical Clinic and worked full time until age 77 when she retired to Minnesota to be near Cheryl and her husband Evan Johnson who live in Marine on Saint Croix. Lucille quickly became a beloved member of the Boutwells Landing senior community where she started a stitching club, crocheted dozens of prayer shawls and afghans, helped coordinate the "I'm Okay" program to look after her neighbors, cheated at dominoes (so Evan says), enjoyed Not Justa Cafe breakfasts with Linda (niece) and John Shaver, and shared her infectious laugh with friends at the Friday afternoon social hour. She will be deeply missed by many, including Gerald and Julie Johnson of Minneapolis, MN (Evan's parents) and Grant and Amy Hutchins of Baldwin, WI (Evan's sister and brother-in-law). A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Des Moines at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, November 12, where she'll be laid to rest next her husband. A reception will follow at Brooks South Town Chapel (at Sunset Memorial). The date for a memorial celebration at Boutwells Landing will be announced soon. An avid reader her whole life, Lucille would appreciate, instead of flowers, a gift in her name to Seedlings Braille Books for Children ( www.seedlings.org).
