Lucia Mama Luz Barrera LUBBOCK-Funeral mass for Lucia Barrera, 89, of Shallowater will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, 2016, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with Father Jim McCartney officiating. Interment will be in the City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Guajardo Funeral Chapels. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., today, Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at Guajardo Funeral Chapels. Mama Luz, as she was affectionately known, passed away on Dec. 13, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Dec. 13, 1927, in Crystal City, Texas, to her late parents, Juan Francisco Ortiz and Maria Ruiz. She married Jose Francisco Barrera on April 1, 1948, in Crystal City, Texas. He passed away on Jan. 2, 2002. She was a homemaker, and had a passion for dogs and loved her family dearly. Mama Luz is survived by her children: Martin Barrera, David Barrera, Vicente Barrera, Baldemar Barrera, all of Lubbock; daughter, Sylvia Nu ez of Shallowater; 17 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Barrera; a son, Juan Jose Barrera; her parents; a granddaughter, Janie Marie Rodriguez; and a great-granddaughter, Ava Martinez. The family suggest memorials be made to Guajardo Funeral Chapels in lieu of flowers.
