Lorraine Norma Bell Griffiths1924 ~ 2015Lorraine Norma Bell Griffiths, 91, passed away on November 5, 2015 with her family gathered around her.Lorraine, also known as "Lorrie," "Larry" and "Nana" was born February 7, 1924 in Royal Oak, Michigan to Emma Peterson and Norman Bell. Always very proud of her Swedish roots, she grew up in Romulus, Michigan and graduated from Romulus High School in 1942. After graduation, she began working for the U.S. Army Air Force Training Command at Romulus Army Air Force base. She was an accomplished tap dancer and employed those skills entertaining the troops in her free time. While working at the airbase, she met a dashing young flyer named William (Bill) Roy Griffiths. They were married on January 19, 1946.Bill and Larry had a single child, Kaye Lorraine, born on October 29, 1946, who later married L. F. "Rick" Gilchrist.Lorraine loved working with numbers and could tell you what she paid for anything she owned down to the penny and she never forgot. Lorraine held a number of jobs including being a court stenographer, legal secretary, Assistant Manager for both Quality Inns Motel and a Sheridan Motel as well as Office Manager for a Realty Company. Fiercely independent, she always worked outside the home even at the time it was not fashionable for women to work. Bill and Larry lived in Taylor, Michigan before moving to Plymouth, Michigan. They then moved to Lake Murray, S.C. After the death of Bill's sister, Glenna (GG) and her husband Tom Mitchell, they moved to W.Va. In 1989, they moved to Boise, Idaho to be near family. Bill had a debilitating stroke in 1990. Larry spent the next seven years taking care of Bill until his death on June 13, 1997.Larry had a huge 90th birthday party with family and friends. Shortly thereafter, she developed kidney problems and had to have one removed. It was then that doctors discovered her cancer.Larry loved working on her crocheting and craft projects which she freely gave to everyone. She worked on these projects and enjoyed her family until her death. She is survived by her sister, Marion Gresser in Wyandotte Michigan; her daughter, Kaye G. Gilchrist and her husband, Rick; grandchildren, Holly Gilchrist and Hart Gilchrist; two great-grandsons, Connor and Max Gilchrist and a number of cousins and extended family in both Scotland and England. Thanks go out to the Saint Luke's Hospice Team, the kind people at Life Care Center on Curtis and Emerald and Bowman's Funeral Parlor for their compassion and assistance in helping Larry and her family.Graveside services will be held at Dry Creek Cemetery on November 13 at 3:00 p.m.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, The Idaho Humane Society or Saint Luke's Hospice Team.
