Lorraine Bowen Obituary

Jul 02, 1922 - Jan 24, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Bowen, LorraineLorraine Hagene Sheets Bowen died in the loving arms of Jesus this afternoon, October 24, 2016, at the age of 94, at Evergreen Retirement Community in Oshkosh. She joins her husband, best friend, confidant, and the love of her life, Donald, who preceded her in death in 2012. She knew the day would come when they would be happily reunited in heaven and her sight would be restored. She and Donald were faithful members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. Lorraine was born on July 1, 1922, to Margaret (Hagene) Sheets and Loren Sheets. She attended Grace Lutheran School and Church. She completed Oshkosh High School in 1939 and then spent one year at Oshkosh Normal School (now UW Oshkosh) before entering nurses training at Mercy Hospital in Oshkosh. Upon graduation from nurses training, WWII was raging and Donald was in the US Navy. He was stationed in Lake City, Florida, and asked her to marry him and join him there. With her parents' blessings, she boarded a train to Florida to become Donald's wife in November 1943. They were married in Jacksonville, Florida. As the war ended, they returned to Oshkosh to start their family. They were blessed with three children, Theodore, Margaret, and Cynthia. In 1950 Lorraine became ill and lost her sight. With the love and devotion of her husband, father, parents-in-law, sister, extended family, dear friends, and her church, she persevered and thrived. She was truly an exceptional example of hard work, determination, faith, and grace. Donald and Lorraine showed deep love and commitment to one another throughout their 69 years of marriage. Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her parents Margaret and Loren Sheets, her step-mother, Hester Sheets, her in-laws, Elsa and Harry Bowen, her brother-in-law, John Ziebell and her son-in-law, John Schellpfeffer. Lorraine is survived by her sister May (John) Ziebell; her children Ted (Karen) Bowen, Margie (John) Schellpfeffer, and Cindy (Bill) Lemke. Her grandchildren are Ed (Kari) Bowen and Ann (Mike) Potratz; Brendon (Amy) Schellpfeffer and Kaity (Andy) Olsen; Matt (Kris) Lemke and Carrie (Brian) Chappa. She is also survived by 11 great grandchildren; Elsie, Lily and Teddy Bowen; Josie and Genna Schellpfeffer, Tristan and Kellen Olsen; Kyle, Ryan and Jake Lemke; and Devin Chappa. The family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Retirement Community for the wonderful care given to our parents over the last ten years. They were always treated with respect. Many laughs and tears were shared. We would also like to thank Pastor Pagel from Immanuel Lutheran Church for his visits and prayers. Mom, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother was deeply loved by her family and will be sadly missed. She will live eternally in God's grace with her dear husband and also in the hearts of her family. Memorial funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 338 North Eagle Street, with Reverend David Pagel officiating. Inurnment will take place at Lake View Memorial Park. A time of visiting and sharing of memories will be on Tuesday from 12 Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the church. Memorials in Lorraine's memory to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired, 754 Williamson Street, Madison, WI, 53703, would be appreciated.
