This obituary is administered by:
Lois Louise (Arvey) PhillipsMay 28, 1924 - December 15, 2016Salem - Lois Louise Phillips, 92, died quietly of an early morning on December 15, 2016, with her beloved dog and companion, Smoky, by her side. The youngest child of Haskell and Ella (Queen) Arvey, Lois was born on May 28, 1924, in Cowee, North Carolina. Music was an important part of the Arvey family life. One Sunday, while playing guitar and singing with some girls at church, their music was heard by a young man from outside the building. When her future husband, Ralph, peeped through the church window, his mind became set in determined pursuit. Lois and Ralph were married on April 5, 1942, in Clayton, Georgia. They moved to Albany, Oregon in 1946 and to Stayton, Oregon in 1950, where they lived for 55 years.Lois was never idle, enjoying many interests. In addition to caring for her family, she square danced, camped, gardened, canned food, upholstered, wall-papered, sewed many garments, and created beautiful oil paintings. She especially enjoyed preparing and sharing meals. Lois volunteered as a hospital aide at Santiam Memorial Hospital for what was to eventually become the auxiliary Cheerette program. During the 1960's, she also bowled on a women's league at Stayton Bowl. She took guitar lessons in the 1970's, played with an all-women's band, The Grateful Grandies, and continued to strum guitar and play harmonica into the latter years of her life. She is preceded in death by her parents, Haskell and Ella (Queen) Arvey; husband, Ralph E. Phillips; all her brothers and sisters, Robert, Belle, Furman, Clyde, Maude, Paul, Mae, Gordon, and Claude; and son-in-law, Ernest Rogers.Lois is survived by daughters, Carolyn Rogers of Portland, Janice (Lloyd) Lowry of Salem, and Gayle (Mark) Cantrell of Windham, New Hampshire; grandchildren Jayson Pakulak of Salem, Matthew (Kris) Pakulak of Rockledge, Florida, and Tegan Cantrell of Windham, New Hampshire; and nine treasured great-grandchildren.The family extends special thanks to Premier Care Homes for their kind and compassionate service.Arrangements are being handled by North Santiam Funeral Service, 224 N. Third Ave., Stayton, OR 97383, 503-769-9010, [email protected] and family are welcomed to celebrate Lois' life on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. at Cascade View Free Methodist Church, 8454 Golf Club Rd., Sublimity, Oregon.
