Larry David LumpkinHorseshoe BayLARRY DAVID LUMPKINOn April 25, 2017 Larry played the final round on his Earthly course of life. All rounds will now be played on the fairways of Heaven. There will be no more bogies, pars or even birdies, as his soul will soar like an eagle forevermore.Larry was born on Aug. 23, 1946, in San Marcos, Texas. The family moved to San Angelo briefly where his father (Jimmy) was a district manager for Maytag and his mother (Evelyn) was secretary to the president of (then) San Angelo College (now ASU). The family then moved to Pecos, Texas, where his mother's family (the Gary family) owned property and they began cotton farming. Larry graduated from Pecos High School in 1964 after winning second at the State Meet in golf with Bruce Cotton, Bill Merritt, and John Harper as teammates. After obtaining approximately 14 basketball scholarships and one golf scholarship Larry opted for the golf (good choice). He then attended Odessa Junior College where they won the NJCAA championship in 1965 (with teammates Bruce Cotton, Jerry Smith, Jerry Reese, and Charles Dicker). He then attended UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso) where his high school sweetheart, Martee (Martha Lee Bickley) was going to college. They married in 1967 and from their union David Lee and Julie Elisabeth Lumpkin were born. After completion of college Larry served in the Army Reserve for two years and then invoked in a career in real estate development in San Angelo before retiring to the golf haven of Horseshoe Bay in 1998. Larry was an avid UT fan; he and Melody had season football tickets for many years prior to his declining health.Larry was preceded in death by his mother and father, Evelyn Gary and James William Lumpkin, mother-in-law, June Willeke Hudson (aka MOM). He is survived by his wife of over 36 years, Melody Hudson Lumpkin, children, David Lee Lumpkin and wife Adriana, Julie Elisabeth Lumpkin Martin and husband Chris, Haley Nicole Lumpkin and fiance Joseph Kuss; grandchildren, Alejandro Acosta and Deana Lee Lumpkin, William Harrison and Madeline Elise Davis, and Evelyn Victoria Lumpkin, sister Kathryn Jo (Kay) Below, nephew Brandon Wade Below and wife Roxanne and Garrett Randall, Connor William, and Caitlyn Elizebeth Below, sister-in-law Honey Hudson, brother-in-laws Mark Hudson and wife Wendy Sue, Matt Hudson and fiance (Jessi Calcote), cousins D'Maris Mirel, Lou Bryan, Joan McShane, and Kenneth Lumpkin. Graveside service is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, Texas. The family will celebrate Larry's life following the service at the Willeke Ranch in San Angelo.
