Passed away Saturday, February 5, 2020 at home. Eugene was born January  17, 1976 in Battle Creek the son of Eugene and Fern (Judy) Leffel. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. Eugene received his Master's degree in education from Western Michigan University and retired from Portage Public Schools as a Social Studies, Art and Driver's Education teacher. He enjoyed bowling, reading, gardening, hiking, drawing and umpiring softball games. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sandra. Also surviving are four children, Michael (Shawn Lewis) Shaw of Safety Harbor, FL, Lisa (Vince) Romano of South Haven, Nicole (Randy) Lloyd of Columbia, MD, Jessica (Richard) Rouse of Kalamazoo; seven grandchildren. Friends will be received from 10 – 11 am Friday, February 9, 2020 at Hookers Funeral Home, Kalamazoo where services will follow at 11 am. Memorial contributions may be made to Kalamazoo Area Humane Society.
