This obituary is administered by:
Katherine Elizabeth CoulterChattanooga, TNKatherine Elizabeth Coulter, known as "Betty" and "Nana," passed away peacefully on July 14, 2017, at the age of 94. Betty was born on December 18, 1922, in Chattanooga, the daughter of Emil Shepherd and Katherine Steiner Davis. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Glenn W. Coulter. She was one of five children. Betty's three brothers Edward F. Davis, James A. Davis and William C. Davis predeceased her. Betty is survived by her sister, Emily Anne Greenwood of Westwood, MA; six children Dave (Judy) of Canton, GA, Steve (Patty) of Knoxville, Kitty Roberts (Terry) of Ooltewah, Anne Shafer (Jeff) of Greenville, SC, Tom (Mindy) of Knoxville, and Mary Voges (Mark) of Lookout Mountain. Nana enjoyed 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren along with a large network of nieces and nephews. She would often proclaim that there was not a bad apple in the bunch! Betty graduated from Notre Dame High School and UTC. She married the love of her life, Glenn W. Coulter, on July 10, 1945. After World War II, Betty and Glenn purchased a home on Brookfield Ave, blocks from Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and built a life revolving around family, faith, and friends. Jesus Christ and Betty's Catholic faith were the cornerstones of her life. Betty was a dedicated mother and expert financier, raising her six children on a limited budget. She lived a friend-filled life, often noting, "You must be friendly if you want to have friends." Betty was known for her quick wit, sweet disposition, and ability to make people smile. Nana loved roses and chocolate! Nana retired to Alexian Village on Signal Mountain in 2001 where she thrived, continuing to live her faith, enjoy life, and make friends. The family appreciates the loving hands and hearts of Nana's final caregivers at Alexian Village. The family will receive friends at Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel, 404 S. Moore Road, from 12:30 to 1:30pm on Tuesday, July 18th. A Funeral Mass celebrating Nana's life will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, July 18th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 501 S. Moore Road. Reverend Joseph McMahan and Reverend Mike Nolan will concelebrate. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Notre Dame High School, 2701 Vermont Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37404. Arrangements are by the East Chapel, Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist. Please share your condolences at www.chattanoogaeastchapel.com
