Joyce Shanks Ouechani, age 67 of Edwardsville, Illinois, died at 5:19 a.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She was born on December 22, 1949, in Pottersville, Missouri, the daughter of the late Jacob & Gail (Luna) Shanks. Joyce was a devoted school teacher in the Southwestern Community School District No. 9 for 35 years. She married Habib Ouechani, November 8, 1975, in Edwardsville; he preceded her in death on July 16, 2005. Joyce is survived by two daughters, Laila Ouechani Gagnon & husband Mike of Edwardsville, Maryam Ouechani of Edwardsville; two grandchildren, Nori Gagnon Vaughn Gagnon; and two brothers, Vernon Shanks & wife Gwenn of Paducah, Kentucky, and Rex Shanks of Troy, Illinois. She was a member of the Fairview Heights Church of Christ in Fairview Heights, Illinois. Joyce was a devoted, mother, grandmother, sister, & friend, who loved reading, gardening, and going to vintage markets. She was also a member & past president of NEA & SEA (National Education Assoc. & Southwestern Education Assoc.). Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at the Fairview Heights Church of Christ. The funeral services will be at noon on Wednesday, at the church with minister's Eugene Ishum & Joe Taylor officiating. The burial will be at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville.
