Joseph Edward "Buck" Wheatley, 93, of Springfield, died Sunday, June 26, 2016, at the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.A native of Washington County, he was born on March 27, 1923, to the late John Thomas and Nancy Filiatreau Wheatley.He was a lifelong member of St. Rose Catholic Church. A graduate of St. Agnes Elementary School and Fredericktown High School, he was a lifelong farmer, a Kentucky Colonel, served in the United States Army during World War II in the Philippines, served on the Board of Directors of the Washington County Cooperative Tobacco Warehouse and was an employee of the former New Home Tobacco Warehouse. For 26 years he drove a school bus for the Washington County School System.Preceding him in death was his wife of 54 years, Mary Gertrude Thomas Wheatley on Feb. 9, 2001; a grandson, Aaron Neel on Aug. 12, 2011; an infant granddaughter, Melissa Carol Neel in 1970; a grandson-in-law, Adam Hughes in 2005 and six sisters, Sarah Wheatley, Anna Laura Osbourne, Josephine Fowler, Martina Newton, Caroline Britt and Catherine Farnsley.Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Neel (Joe), of Bardstown, and Lorrie Wheatley (Bill), of Springfield; three grandchildren, Pat Neel (Susan), of Springfield; Emily Cheek (Jason), of Bardstown, and Sara Mattingly Hughes, of Cox's Creek; six great-grandchildren; five stepgreat- grandchildren and seven stepgreat-great- grandchildren.A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, at the St. Rose Catholic Church with the Rev. Kevin McGrath, the church pastor, officiating.Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Carey & Son Funeral Home by the Rev. Kevin McGrath.Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Carey & Son Funeral Home. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be nieces.Pallbearers will be nephews, Eddie Newton, Lonnie Fowler, Dennis Stapp, Damion Osbourne, Ricky Thomas and Steve Thomas.Carey & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
