He was born on November 13, 1934 in Omaha, NE. He graduated Canoga Park High School and served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956, with postings at Fort Ord, CA and Kamakura, Japan. Upon discharge, he lived and worked throughout Asia to include Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, and Vietnam. Besides being well-traveled, John was renowned for his incredible tales and masterful storytelling. He became branch owner and manager of California Pools within the Simi Valley, Moorpark, West San Fernando Valley area. He is survived by his three children, Iris Harrison (Tualatin, OR), Mark Smith (Colorado Springs, CO), and Neil Smith (Simi Valley, CA); five grandchildren, Alec Christensen (Wilsonville, OR), Anthony Smith (Simi Valley, CA), and Phineas, Aesop, and Dakota Smith (Raeford, NC); and great grandchild Addison Christensen (Wilsonville, OR). John made his own arrangements and upon his wishes, services will not be held. His remains will be interned at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.
