John was born on October 28, 1921 at Tamingfu, Hopei, China of missionary parents. Survivors; son John Mark Sutherland, Granddaughter Jaclyn Louise Sutherland and grandsons John Campbell Sutherland III, Stephen Albert Sutherland, brothers, Robert Bowman Sutherland, Francis Charles Sutherland, Dr Paul Sutherland and sisters Edith Margaret Carlson, and Ellen Ann Reisch. His younger brother Dr. David Sutherland preceded him in death in 2005.John attended Northwest Nazarene Grammar School. Northwest Nazarene Academy, and Northwest Nazarene College(NNU). While attending NNC he was an active member of the debating team representing the college against competing colleges and universities throughout the northwest. He graduated June, 1941.He was the first student from NNC to go directly to a medical school and graduated from Marquette University Medical School Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1946. He joined the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon serving 2 years with the Strategic Air Command. Then he joined the Mangum Clinic in Nampa, Idaho. He met and married Eunice Lucille Hendricks, a nurse at Samaritan Hospital. In 1954 they welcomed a son, John Mark.In 1950-1954 he was a resident in Pathology at St. Francis Hospital at Wichita, Kansas and clinical resident at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He then returned to Nampa and joined the Mangum Clinic. He also taught courses in biology and nursing at Northwest Nazarene College.John and Lucille volunteered as medical missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene. They served 2 five year terms, mainly at the Ethel Lucas Memorial Hospital in Acornhoek, Eastern Transvaal, except for 1 year at Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital in Manzini, Swaziland. He learned to speak Shangaan, some Zulu, and Afrikaans.While at Acorn Hoek he researched assembled data of incidents of cancer occurring among local tribes. These were published in the South Africa Medical Journal.Returning to the United States he spent 1 year at Stanford University in Palo Alto in the Pathology department to become up-to-date on his pathology training.He was Head Research Pathology, Baltimore Cancer Research Program national Cancer Institute and Deputy Chief of Pathology University of Maryland School of Medicine. While at the university, he co-authored with Jon Franklin a 2-time Pulitzer Prize winning author, Guinea Pig Doctors(The Drama of Medical Research Through Self-Experimentation). John himself had been a guinea pig doctor.After retiring John and Lucille moved to Tucson, Arizona where the University of Arizona Medical School granted him lab facility privileges to continue his cancer research that he started while at the University of Maryland.John and Lucille then moved to Atkinson, Nebraska, Lucille's home town. John continued his cancer research setting up his lab in the basement. A local veterinarian cooperated by furnishing live cancer specimens from cattle.His beloved wife Eunice Lucille Hendricks passed away in 2008. He returned to Nampa where he joined his siblings, Frank and Paul Sutherland and his sister Ellen Reisch. He enjoyed being close to College Church and his alma mater NNU and the various activities connected with the university.John was an enthusiastic Toast Master and won many awards for his humorous speeches. He also was a birdwatcher and could spot and name numerous species. He loved to catch fish often in spots that most fishermen overlooked. He was an active member of Gideons and delighted in handing out new testaments to students and serving in organizing Gideon Chapters. He continued to be active in Tucson as Associate Pathologist at the Sierra Vista Community Hospital. A memorial service celebrating his life will be at College Church of the Nazarene 504 Dewey Avenue, Nampa, Idaho at 11am, April 23.In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Lucille Sutherland, Nurse's Scholarship fund NNU 623 University Avenue, Nampa, Idaho 83686 or Nampa Gideons PO Box 173 Nampa, Idaho 83653.
