John Shannon Obituary

Nov 11, 1948 - Jul 10, 2015

This obituary is administered by:
John M. ShannonNovember 11, 1948 - July 10, 2015John M. Shannon passed away on Friday July 10th, 2015 in Boise. John was born on November 11, 1948 to John and Dorothy (Nylander) Shannon. He attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Nampa and graduated from Nampa High School in 1967. He married Marilyn Scrivner in June 1969 and they moved to Pocatello where John attended ISU and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. John spent the next 35 years living in Pocatello where in 1982 he married MaryLee Patten. During those years his career was in collections; first with his Aunt Betty Girardi in Blackfoot, later starting a CheckRite business in Pocatello with a longtime friend. These jobs eventually led to John opening his own collection business. He was very involved with the local democratic party and was also very active in his Catholic parish. John made many close friends and had a lot of fond memories of his time in Pocatello. Lots of his stories started out with "When I was in Pocatello". In 2006 John moved back to the Nampa area which he always called "God's country" to be closer to family. In 2008 he moved to Cascade to manage a family owned motel called the Birch Glen. John made friends where ever he went and Cascade was no exception. Friendships within the community as well as with motel guests were quick to get established. In the summer of 2014 John was diagnosed with a terminal illness and moved back to Boise to be with family. In the fall of that same year he got to do a bucket list item and made it to the Oregon Coast with his sisters and brothers in law. His first remark after going down to the beach was "I didn't know it would be this loud". He had a memorable trip and came back (reluctantly) feeling great. In January 2015 John's health started to decline but he never lost his great sense of humor and wonderful smile. John will be sorely missed by his family and friends. John is survived by his brother Kelly Shannon (Teresa) of Bellevue, his sisters Jane Robinson (Chuck) of Nampa, Maureen Webb (Mike) of Boise. Three nephews Chad Robinson (Abigail), Eric Robinson (Cindy) and Kelly Shannon Jr. and their families. His Uncle Bill Nylander of Modesto Ca. and his Aunt Lois Nylander of Homedale and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Dorothy Shannon, a sister Katherine and MaryLee Shannon.John's family wishes to thank his care givers at Good Samaritan in Boise and a special thanks to brother in law Mike Webb and cousin Pat Shannon for all their support and love.John left us with this Shannonism: "You pay good money to be aggravated!" ?In lieu of flowers a contribution can be made to the ALS Association at www.alsa.org. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 17, 2015, at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel. An online guestbook is available at www.nampafuneralhome.com.
