March 8, 1925 - October 26, 2016John Ruiz Vasquez was called to heaven by the Lord on October 26, 2016 at the age of 91. He was born on March 8, 1925 in Von Ormy, Texas, and graduated from Somerset High School in 1942. John was a lifelong resident of the San Antonio area.John was married on December 19, 1947 to Loretta Carrillo who passed away in 2011 after 63 years of marriage. He was a devoted husband and father, raising three sons and a daughter. With his love and direction all of his children graduated from college and two completed post-graduate programs.During WW II, John volunteered for the US Navy and served in the South Pacific. He was assigned to a Joint Assault Signal Company charged with establishing communications between land, sea and air operational units. In that capacity he participated in several beach landings. After Japan surrendered, he was assigned shore duty responsibilities in Tokyo.Upon his return to San Antonio he attended classes at Trinity University and was employed at Kelly AFB. While working at Kelly AFB, his job duties included investigation of malfunctioning aircraft escape capsules, writing technical manuals and traveling internationally to train aircraft support staff. He retired in 1990.John was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. He previously served as president of the congregation of Trinidad Lutheran Church and was also a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.John is survived by three sons, three daughter-in-laws and one daughter, Eleuterio & Mary Vasquez of Saratoga, California, Andy & Rosemary Vasquez of San Antonio, John & Maria Elma Vasquez of San Antonio, and Marisela Vasquez of San Antonio. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren; Nicholas Arellano, Jr., John Arellano, Veronica Silva, Cristina Vasquez, Monica Goodwin, Jessica Vasquez, Eric Vasquez, Michael Vasquez, Vincent Vasquez, Carla Curran and nine great-grandchildren; Nicholas Arellano III, Evelyn Arellano, Carlos Arellano, Wyatt Vasquez, Clara Vasquez, Gabriela Goodwin, Alexa Curran, April Curran and Hayley Curran. He is also survived by his sister, Stella Trujillo.All services will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 6914 Wurzbach Rd. There will be visitation October 28, 2016 between the hours of 5 PM and 9 PM with a Prayer Service and celebration of his life at 8 PM. Funeral services will be held on October 29, 2016 at 11 AM followed by interment at Mission Burial Park North. The family requests that donations to Shepherd of the Hills be made in lieu of flowers. Services under the direction of Castillo Mission Funeral Home.
