He graduated from Roseville High School in 1939, and went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad as an apprentice machinist. John met Louise Masters in 1940 and became engaged on January 26, 1942. He was drafted on Aug 10, 1942 and sent to Meridian, Mississippi. He sent for Louise and they married at the Army Chapel on November 11, 1942. He was deployed three days later. He served in the 727th Railroad Battalion in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He was proud of his service in the Army but often stated that he prayed each day for God to let him return home to his beloved wife, Louise. Upon return - he often commented he would never leave American soil again - or his wife's side. He returned to Southern Pacific, where he worked 41 years as machinist. John leaves behind his wife, Louise of 74 years; sons Richard, James, Paul and daughter Maribeth Prendergast. He leaves 5 grandsons, Jeff, Jason, Jarrod, TJ, Kyle and granddaughter Brie Russell. And 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son: John Robert (Bob). He was very active in his church community, coached at Pacific Little League, Boy Scouts, auxiliary police and volunteer fireman. He served in the Knights of Columbus, Holy Spirit Parents Club, Mr. & Mrs. Club and the American Slavic Club. John built a summer cabin in 1962 in Strawberry, CA and enjoyed raising his family in the mountains.
