John C. Lungren Obituary

Sep 20, 1944 - Nov 02, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
After a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, John C. Lungren, Jr., died on November 2, 2016, at his home in Fair Oaks, California. John was born on September 20, 1944, in Long Beach, California, to Dr. John C. Lungren, and Lorain K. Lungren, both now deceased. He attended St. Anthony's High School and went on to earn three degrees a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, a Masters in English at California State University, Long Beach, and a Juris Doctor from the Southwestern University School of Law. Before settling into his career, John volunteered with the U.S. Army's Third Armored Division, serving in the 45th Medical Battalion in Germany from 1966 to 1968. After his tour of duty, he became a reporter for the Long Beach Press Telegram and then a public relations manager for TRW in Redondo Beach, California. John and his family moved to the Sacramento area in 1987 when he was appointed by then Governor George Deukmejian to serve as California's Chief of Consumer Services and Public Affairs. Another California Governor, Pete Wilson, later appointed John to the California Trade and Commerce Agency. In 2003, John joined the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank in Sacramento. He also was a former board member and vice chairman of the California Prison Industry Authority. John was a humble and kind man who was a devout Catholic. He was known for his great love of Notre Dame and its football program. He also had a deep love for reading that reflected his sharp intellect. Nothing pleased him more than to connect with people, discover their interests and then recommend a book they might enjoy. He built a substantial book collection and even wrote books of his own. He authored Hesburgh of Notre Dame: Priest, Educator, Public Servant and coauthored Healing Richard Nixon: A Doctor's Memoir with his father, who was President Nixon's personal physician. John is survived by his beloved wife and caregiver Nancy Jean Lungren, whom he met when she was teaching his younger sister Elizabeth at St. Barnabas School in Long Beach, California. November 7 would have been their 46th wedding anniversary. He also is survived by: four children, Lisa Marie Lungren (Davide Sonzogni), John Andrew Lungren, David Lawrence Lungren (Rebecca), and Erin Kathleen Molinaro (Jim); two grandchildren, Margaret "Milly" Lorain Lungren and James Anthony Molinaro III; and six siblings, Daniel Lungren (Bobbi), Christine Lungren-Maddalone (Raymond), Loretta Vestermark (Gary), Brian Lungren (Nancy), Patricia Lungren Partridge, and Elizabeth Lungren. A Funeral Mass will be held at 4:00 pm, December 1 at Divine Savior Catholic Church, 9079 Greenback Lane, Orangevale, California. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the John C. Lungren, M.D., Pre-Professional Medical Scholarship at the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame Donor Services, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556) or to the National Parkinson Foundation (Memo: John C. Lungren Jr. Memoriam, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131).
