John was born on July 11, 1925 in Earlham where he attended school. After moving to Des Moines he worked for Firestone from 1945 until his retirement in 1985. John was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Local 310 URW and Economic Club.John is survived by his daughter, Jo Ellen O'Neal; granddaughters, Tricia (Scott) Christensen and Felicia (Garrett) Moe; great-grandchildren, Meadow, Willow, Dexter and Juliette; sister, Kay Trimble; and longtime companion, Iona Vernon. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia; two brothers; two sisters; two sons; and a daughter.Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines, with burial to follow at Earlham Cemetery.
