It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Joanne Smith, affectionately known as Dot or Dottie, on September 7, 2024. Born in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, on August 16, 1947, Joanne was a true city girl at heart, even after making Chesapeake, Virginia her home for the last 20 years. She was a compassionate soul, always ready to lend a hand and share a laugh. Her love for her family, her faith, and life itself was genuine and palpable, making her a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew her.
Joanne was a humble homemaker, creating a sanctuary of love and warmth for her family. She had a passion for music and movies, which brought joy and laughter into her home. Joanne was not one to seek the limelight, but her loving nature did not go unnoticed. Her commitment to her Baptist faith was unwavering, and she served as a missionary, spreading love and kindness wherever she went. The verse from Proverbs 31:25, "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future," encapsulates Joanne's spirit and her ability to remain strong, even in the face of adversity.
Joanne is survived by her children Willie Moore, James Moore, Darlene Moore, and Lorenzo Moore; her siblings William Smith, Albert Jr., Frank Smith, Warren Smith, Muriel Smith, Virginia Cotton, and Constance Bennett; her grandchildren Robert Holliday, James Townsend, Jordan Moore, Zion Moore, Tashae Geoff, James Jerido, Terrell Jerido, Jamal Jerido, and Duane Jerido; and her great-grandchildren Bryson Holliday and Naomi Holliday. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Josephine Smith, and her siblings Cheryl Smith, Nancy Smith, Helen Smith, and Michael Smith.
We invite all who knew and loved Joanne to share their memories by offering a few loving words. In remembering Joanne, let us celebrate her life and the joy, love, and laughter she brought into ours. She may not be with us in person, but her spirit and the memories we have of her will forever live on in our hearts.
