Janet Duebner Obituary

Apr 26, 1937 - Oct 11, 2014

This obituary is administered by:
Duebner, JanetJanet Duebner, loving wife, mother and friend was called home to God after a long battle with a brain tumor on Saturday evening, October 11, 2014 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. She was 77.Janet was born on April 26, 1937 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Renata and Hubert Nelesen. As a young girl Janet loved to play tennis and other competitive sports. She attended First German Lutheran School, Lincoln High School and the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she earned a degree in elementary education in three and one half years. Only days after her graduation, Janet married her high school sweetheart, Denny Duebner, on January 31, 1959 at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. In 1960, Janet and Denny moved from Sheboygan, Wisconsin to New York where she continued her career as an elementary school teacher. After starting a family, Janet retired from teaching and focused her great energy and enthusiasm on being a wife, mother and an active contributor to the many communities of which she was a part. Janet passionately supported her church and community after moving to Golden Valley, Minnesota in 1969. Her Christian faith led her to be an active member of Golden Valley Lutheran Church for 28 years where she worked to establish and served as the treasurer for its Child Care Center, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She also raised funds for the Lutheran Woman's Missionary League and served as its circuit president. As both a member and the president of the Golden Valley Women's Club, she helped to establish the Golden Valley Recycling Center and develop a park beside the Golden Valley Library. Janet was the chairman of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation Board and supported the development of Medley Park near their home. She also joined the American Association of University Women and served as its treasurer. Starting in 1998, Janet and Denny enjoyed spending half of the year in Naples, Florida and half in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. On the court across from their home in Naples, Janet played tennis well into her 60s. They made many new beloved friends during their retirement years and enjoyed frequent visits from family and friends to their new homes. Janet and Denny also loved to travel to Europe or to visit friends, children and grandchildren, especially if they could attend a baptism, confirmation, graduation or sporting event. Janet loved to garden and quilt. Her hosta garden in Sturgeon Bay contains more than 100 different varieties. And, if you also liked to garden, she would happily send you home with cuttings from her plants. She was instrumental in creating and maintaining the beautiful gardens at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay and she served on the Landscape Committee at Wiggins Lakes and Preserve in Naples where she learned about warmer climate gardening. When she couldn't be outside gardening, she created beautiful quilts and wall hangings for her family and friends. She was a member of community quilters groups and a story and photo of her Christmas tree covered with small miniature quilts was published in the Naples Daily News. In 2001, Janet self-published an excellent genealogy book on the Duebner and Nelesen families called, "Our Heritage." She constructed multiple family trees including one that goes back to a great-great-great-great grandfather of Denny's who was born in Germany in 1759. This accomplishment is even more amazing when you realize that her research primarily consisted of visiting churches, cemeteries and government buildings prior to the prevalence of the internet. Janet is survived by her husband, Denny Duebner; her children, Laura Wareham and her husband Jamie, David Duebner and his wife Sara, and Clare Shumaker and her husband Greg; her sister, Shirley Honold, and her daughters, Kathy Brodin and Kris Krueger; and her grandchildren, Rachel, Carl and Aaron Duebner, Sean and Collin Wareham, and Cara, Sloane, Elizabeth and Matthew Shumaker. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and a funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on on Friday, October 17, 2014 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1756 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, 54235. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, 2221 Michigan Avenue, Manitowoc, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in her honor be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church or Faith Lutheran Church, 4150 Goodlette-Frank Road, Naples, Florida, 34103.
