James Smith was born April 5, 1925 to Lyon and Lizzy Smith in shorterville Alabama. He was the youngest of twelve children who all proceeded him in death. His first seven years were spent on a farm where his family drew water from a well that his father dug.

At the age of eight James parents moved their family to Atlanta, Georgia where he attended Spite High School for 11 years. 12th grade was added after his graduation he aspired to be a teacher.

James met and later married Gloria Smith April 7, 1942. James migrated to Columbus Ohio for employment and sent for her stating she should "take the first thing moving" to join him. To this Union two children were born. In 1943 James and Gloria made Detroit, Michigan their home.

James leaves to mourn his passing his two children; Chauncey(Brenda) and James jr. Six grandchildren; T'Chalta(Michelle), Kenyatta, Shantice, Quianna, Eboni & Nyisha. Three great-grandchildren; Steve(LaKiesha), Aaron, Michael & one great grandchild; Leiah.
