This obituary is administered by:
James Robert KarnSavannah, GAJames Robert Karn, age 91, of Savannah, GA, (formerly of Memphis) passed away on July 22, 2017. Jim was born on November 12, 1925 to William Joseph and Mary O'Connor Karn in Green Bay, WI. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Bill Karn of Green Bay, Pat Karn of Richmond, VA, and his sister Margaret Vandenbusch of Green Bay. Jim is survived by his two children, Leanne Dodd (Richard) of Savannah, and James Karn of Memphis, his three grandchildren, Martha Ann, Margaret, and Catherine. He is also survived by Ann Richardson Karn, former wife and good friend of the deceased. He also leaves behind his sister in law Peggy Karn of Richmond, VA and many nieces and nephews that brought him much joy through the years. Jim was proud to join the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and should you ever forget that, he was quick to remind you. He was a member of the 5th Marine Division, 5th Tank Battalion and landed on Iwo Jima and Japan. After the war, Jim began his business career operating a filling station with his younger brother Pat. He then worked for Charmin Paper Company of Green Bay, a job that moved him to Memphis, TN. In 1957, he started Karn Automotive Products, a wholesale supplier to the automotive industry still in operation today. After retiring, he moved to Savannah, GA in 2004. In addition to business, Jim was an avid golfer, enjoyed restoring vintage cars and was a loyal Green Bay Packer fan. His retirement years were spent mostly at LaVida Country Club and visiting his good neighbors along Back Street. Yet, it was helping others that perhaps gave him the most joy. He never walked past someone he thought needed help. He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church. The family would like to express their most heartfelt thanks to Steve Williamson for his remarkable kindness and to his wonderful caregivers, Kiel Brown and Lennette Chainey who always kept him in good spirits. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm in the chapel of the Carmelite Monastery on Wednesday, July 26. The family will receive family and friends for a reception immediately following the service at their home.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Carmelite Monastery, 11 West Back Street Savannah, GA 31419.
