NEWPORT - James Charles Forbes, 76, of Newport, died Oct. 17, 2012, at Carteret General Hospital.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at VFW Post 9960, 246 VFW Road, Swansboro.

Mr. Forbes was born on Dec. 6, 1935, in Baltimore, Md., to James Lee and Ethel Linnea Anderson Forbes. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and was a life member of VFW (Post 9960) and the Fleet Reserve. Mr. Forbes served his country in Vietnam.

His was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jean Forbes; daughter, Laurie Forbes Neff and husband, Mark, of Manassas, Va.; son, James Charles Forbes Jr. of Oakland, Calif.; sisters, Betty Lee Hodgson of Baltimore, Md., Grace Frank of Baltimore, Md., and Linda Godomski of Pa.; grandchildren, Madeline I., Lucy I., and Lila E. Neff; and many nieces and nephews.
