Jack Payton Butrum Sr., was born on September 14, 1933 in the Underwood Community of Macon County, TN. He was the second child and oldest son of Ernest Sedford Butrum and Hazel Jent Butrum Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Evelyn Harth, and his brother, Jerry W. Butrum.

Jack and his first wife had 6 children. They are: Jack P. Butrum Jr., and wife Joan of Williamsport, MD, Jeffery R. Butrum and wife Teresa of Winterville, NC, Beverly Butrum of Mesa, AZ, Nanci Jo McGarvey and husband Gregg of Warsaw, NC, Cheryl Griffin of Fayetteville, NC, and Leanne Pitts and husband Richard of Greenville, NC. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

In June of 1987, he married his wife Katie, an Army Nurse he met while both were stationed in Germany. She survives.

Jack passed away at his home on Monday, October 10, 2016, at the age of 83. Funeral services for him were conducted on Thursday, October 13, 2016 from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home, with Dr. James Ryan officiating. He was buried at Underwood Cemetery with full Military Honors.
