It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hyman "Speedy' Burton, a beloved father, grandfather, husband, and friend. John peacefully passed away on October 24, 2025, surrounded by his family, at the age of 63.
Born on April 26, 1955, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Hyman grew up with a passion for the outdoors and a deep love for his community. After graduating from high school, he went on to serve his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, where he earned commendations for his dedication and courage.
After his service, John returned to Natchitoches and began a long career as a supervisor, working for more than 20 years with Roy O Martin Plywood. Known for his meticulous work ethic, he played a key role in several landmark construction projects in the region. His colleagues often referred to him as “the man who could build anything.”
Outside of work, Hyman was an avid outdoorsman who loved hiking, fishing, and camping with his family. He spent countless weekends on the river passing on his love for nature to his children and grandchildren. He also volunteered regularly at his local church, where he served as a deacon and mentor to many younger members of the congregation.
Hyman is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Sarah Burton; his two children, Hyman Burton Jr. (Lisa) and Crystal Burton (John); his four grandchildren, Rayne, Gabriella, Ja'Shaun and Ja'Coby, one stepdaughter Dinesha Paige (Cas); and his brother, Edward Burton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Helen Burton.
Hyman's family invites you to celebrate his life at a memorial service on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Agape Love Center, Natchitoches, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Hyman’s honor to the American Cancer Society.
Hyman will be remembered for his generosity, his dedication to family, and his unwavering faith. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
